Tortoise – A Lazarus Taxon
Previous Masada – Sanhedrin Next The Missing Ensemble – Hidden Doors

Artist: Tortoise
Album: A Lazarus Taxon
Label: Thrill Jockey
Year: 2006
Designer: Tortoise and Sheila Sachs, photographs by Urs Odermatt
Type of music: Post Rock
Notes: Other Tortoise sleeves might be more clever (e.g. TNT) and I’m not bowled over by the typography, but for sheer pleasure, I’ll take the wonderfully titled A Lazarus Taxon any day. Urs Odermatt and Tortoise are clearly a match made in heaven.
As a sleeve designer i don’t say this lightly, but this has got to be my favourite sleeve design. Though the type on the spine is slightly annoying the photography is beautiful. Well done Sheila Sachs/Tortoise, i tip my digital cap to you.

the photos get me every time, composed (in both senses of the word)… one could even imagine they were deliberate set-ups.. almost too perfect.
Very much not though! Urs Odermatt was a Swiss policeman. His photographs both of accidents, his life in the mountains and his fellow policemen are fascinating.
Gorgeous.
And as a rabid Tortioise fan I can say leagues better than any of the shite they normally try to pass off as covers. They should have had designs like this all along.
