It’s psychological. I think, on the whole, people who take interest in the larger world of music outside of mainstream Pop *are* clamoring for lossless, because, in one way or the other, it has been reinforced over and over that quality matters somehow. For years! Over and over — be it the musicians, the technicians, the marketers, whatever…buying deluxe box sets of 180g audiophile wax and then immediately taking crappy mp3s sitting down just becuase the quote industry says so is just incongruent in these people’s minds. Colin and kj, I agree with you mostly, but I side with Simon on this one.

ummm, 98% of people, including you, the commenters here, i’d wager cannot tell the difference when presented with a blindfold test of AAC vs. 128 MP3 VS. FLAC on their headphones via an ipod.

i’m in the recording industry and i’ve witnessed or read the results of three of these tests. people are NOT clamoring for FLAC. and btw, it *pains* me to admit this, as a recording professional, cuz i go to great pains to make anything i work on sound the best. but them’s the breaks….

I know what you mean Simon, but I don’t think the industry is ready for FLAC. Don’t forget even the States is moving towards metered rather than unlimited bandwidth.

Interesting, but i felt like stopping reading when the words “high-quality 256kbps AAC format” appeared in the opening paragraph.

Seriously, i’ll *begin* to consider these kinds of gimmicks when the industry realises people want LOSSLESS format. i mean, come on – they’re trying to push a “deluxe” format here – the least one can expect is a lossless option. Until then, not interested, not one tiny little bit.
