Title: Pale Blue Dot
Label: Lo Recordings
Year: 2008
Designer: Art direction by Non-Format & Gavin O’Shea, design by Non-Format

Notes: To get at the CD you have to thread the plastic tag through the hole, but I think the intention is that it’s cut off as there’s a handy little pocket for the exterior tags.

Title: makesnd cassette, tender love
Label: Mille Plateaux
Year: 1999, 2002
Designer: unspecified, but surely by snd themselves?
Type of music: could write reams about this, but how about syncopated electronic minimalism?
Notes: Snd’s graphics are as rigorous and playful as their music. I particularly like tender love’s combination of lovely colours, sentimental associations and digital waveforms. These albums are regretably as rare as hen’s teeth since Mille Plateaux went bankrupt. I had hoped to include their second album, Stdio, which I bought from discogs, but my copy seems to have gone missing somewhere between here and Hong Kong. If anyone wants to sell me a copy do let me know!

Stanley Donwood, best known as Radiohead’s brilliant designer/illustrator has set up a new record label: 6 inch records. As the label’s homepage states:

There will only ever be 3 six inch records releases.

There will only ever be 333 copies of each release.

Yours truly has nabbed (paid for) a copy of each to feature here in the new year. Watch this space!

Artist: Benge
Title: 20 Systems
Label: Expanding Records
Year: 2008
Designer: Paul Merritt, photography by Paul Edwards and Ben Edwards, layout by Daniel Edwards
Type of music: Electronic
Notes: Benge’s Twenty Systems is an example of good rather than great design. My (small) reservations are that the instrument photography is rather pedestrian and I wonder why the artist’s name is placed at the crease on the front? However, I do love the amount of information it presents, the manner in which it is presented and the concept behind it.

Each of the twenty tracks is named for the synthesizer that it was played on. The CD is placed at the back of the jewel case-sized hardback book in which there are introductions by Scanner and Benge as well as pages and images for each track and a small gallery of close-up photographs. The whole thing is information-rich and satisfyingly focused in a way that’s infinitely more pleasurable than scrabbling around on the web for relevant information. And the music is an other-worldly delight.

Thanks to Cargo for the review copy.
