Notes I couldn’t resist posting this now, snowflake motif and all. Season’s greetings to you, hope you have a great holiday.

From the Kvitnu website: “This is second volume from series of albums dedicated to Purification by Four Elements: Water. The music is composed by Kateryna Zavoloka, transmitting different states of water and how they can be specifically translated to the sound. Low frequencies as a depth, traditional vocal as surface of sonic water. This album is a result of 2-years research, including work at Electroacoustic Music Studio at Academy of Music in Cracow and concerts-performances in collaboration with live generative interactive visuals from Laetitia Morais.”

Notes Unknown Public switched from the boxes of the initial editions to a hardback book format. Changing Platforms was a special edition to mark the centenary of the UK’s Contemporary Music Network. As such, the book was of different proportions and contained an attractive infographic poster.

Each edition continued to focus upon a particular theme and was packed full of information about the music compiled on the accompanying CD. Featured writers included David Toop and Kevin LeGendre, while the musicians contained on these two CDs included Harrison Birtwistle, Carla Bley, Mike Westbrook, Efterklang, Terje Isungset, and Arild Andersen among a host of others. I think it’s still possible to get hold of these, they’re well worth it.

Manuel S Z / Optigram was kind enough to send me a preview of an upcoming release. His work for a wide range of contemporary dubstep and dance-related artists is some of the most interesting design around currently. I’m looking forward to featuring it in 2012.

Previous Zomby – Dedication, Nothing Next Mini exclusive from Optigram

Boy who cried wolf is a little like how I feel at the moment. Thank you for the kind responses to my previous post announcing a hiatus. In hindsight I needed to write it to draw a line in the sand. The act of doing so has caused me to have a bit more of a think and I’m going to try to continue with HF. I can’t make any promises, but week by week I’ll see how it goes. If you know of any labels that need/deserve/would like coverage here please do let me know and if you ever see an opportunity to spread the word about the site, that would be great as well.

Thanks again for reading.

Music Mortal
Notes I’m firmly convinced of Zomby’s brilliance. Where Were U in ’92?, a thrilling record apparently thrown up by one of 4hero’s wrinkles in time undermined received ideas of (logical) progression. Its successor, this year’s Dedication was a deeply felt reflection upon mortality, apparently prompted by the loss of a person close to Zomby – both the album and its companion EP Nothing bear the text “Dedicated to BDM 11.11.46 – 25.06.10″. The grief at the heart of Dedication’s 16 tracks is ultimately elegiacal while the structures through which that melancholy is expressed make ridiculous any discussion of the album solely in terms of the utilitarian functionality of dance music. Although this prompts reference to Burial, this listener is more moved to think of Borges’ compressed fictions, De Chirico’s symbolism or Warhol’s death and disaster paintings.Black and white are the (non) colours used by the uncredited designer for these two releases. Dedication bears no images except the broken heart on the compact disc itself. It has two distinct faces, the front which displays the titles, dedication, etc and the reverse which is entirely blank. Nothing opts for blank, but embossed faces. The white label, dance music’s prime coin, is enlarged to become the entire object. The white of heaven or nothingness? Perhaps one and the same.

Notes Ashamed to say that Les Disques du 7ème Ciel only recently appeared on Hard Format’s horizons. The label clearly pays loving attention to its releases, please do check their website for other releases. It’s also the only place where you can buy this release (500 copies only). This six song, 10″ vinyl comes replete with CD version, two prints of the motifs used inside and out of the gatefold sleeve and your very own embroidered badge: needle and thread at the ready!
