HARDHOUND

Patterns

March 26th, 2011

Once in a blue moon, I like to look over the Hard Format homepage and observe its chance congruences – there’s the three gesturing hands close by each other, the two skulls alternating with two faces, the two Victorian-era images and so on. With the publication today of a post on Second Language’s Minute Papillon, we have the homepage’s most striking coincidence yet – three yellow designs each with strong circular motifs… Can you spot any others?

Portrait of Milt Gabler, Herbie Hill, Lou Blum, and Jack Crystal, Commodore Record Shop, New York, ca. Aug. 1947

February 16th, 2011

Now that’s a record shop.

From the rather marvellous Gottlieb Jazz Photos collection, Library of Congress, on Flickr:

Gottlieb was both a notable jazz journalist and a self-taught photographer who captured the personalities of jazz musicians and told their stories with his camera and typewriter. His portraits depict such prominent musicians and personalities as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald, and many more.

Vinyl production video

February 9th, 2011

This is a rather lovely and distinctly hypnotic film of a German vinyl record factory recorded by deafstar.org who state:

Footage recorded @ Pallas Records in Diepholz, Germany, one of the last factories in Europe producing vinyl records. Footage covers many aspects of the production of a vinyl record in a loose manner, combining it with the sound of Bunker Hill and the track “pushing …”

Happy new year to you!

December 31st, 2010

Simon Fisher Turner – Caravaggio

Sorry if the above image is rather melancholic, it was the first post of 2010. Best viewed as a fond farewell to the old year…

I hope you’ve enjoyed Hard Format this year as much as I have had in publishing it. Sincere thanks to all the designers, musicians, labels and distributors for producing so much wonderful work and to you for visiting.

I hope you have a great 2011.

All the best, Colin.

PS For anyone interested, I’ve just published my personal view of the past year’s listening on my blog, A Personal Miscellany: 2010 – a year in listening. Comments very welcome.
